I love this checkered heart: the geometric pattern gives it a graphic look that’s a nice change from a plain solid heart. On the grid, red and cream squares alternate in little two-by-two blocks, with a burgundy outline drawing out the shape, and a soft light-pink edge along the top of the two humps for a touch of sweetness.

The easiest way in is to lay the outline down first, then fill the inside block by block, following the color alternation — count out two beads before switching shade, that’s what gives the checkerboard its charm. Once ironed, this heart makes a really pretty piece to hang up, or a sweet handmade gift for someone you love.
