Space Fuse Beads: 10+ Cosmic Designs for an Out-of-This-World Craft Day

Blast off! In our house, the moment the fuse beads come out on a rainy afternoon, the kids ask for the same thing every time: rockets, planets and cute little aliens. Space is the perfect theme for Hama beads — simple shapes, bold colours and that little bit of magic when a spaceship comes to life bead by bead. I’ve rounded up more than ten designs to make together, mixing gems I found around the web with a few easy home-made grids you can follow with your eyes closed. Pop your helmet on — we’re taking off!

3, 2, 1… lift-off: rockets

You can’t start a space adventure without a proper rocket! It’s often the very first model my kids nail on their own: a long white body, a pointy red nose, two fins and — best of all — the orange and yellow flames underneath. Here’s a little home-made grid to follow bead by bead to get you going:

Build your own solar system of planets

After the rocket, it’s time for planets! A little tip from one crafty mum to another: round planets are the perfect excuse to borrow a ready-made grid. A cross-stitch chart or a pixel-art circle converts straight over to beads — one drawn square = one bead placed. My favourite is Saturn with its ring, which always pops thanks to those yellow and grey beads:

Then play with sizes and colours to build a whole solar system: a small red Mars, a blue-and-green Earth, a big yellow Sun… Lined up on a shelf, the effect is out of this world.

Astronauts, aliens and flying saucers

This is the part the kids ask for on repeat: the little space dwellers! A green alien with big black eyes comes together in no time, and everyone can invent their own — one antenna, three eyes, why not?

To ferry them around, nothing beats a flying saucer. I completely fell for this alien scene from Fun Loving Families, with its silver ship and colourful portholes:

Top tip: an all-white astronaut with a golden visor always looks great parked right next to their rocket.

A starry sky: stars, moon and comets

To fill in the background of your galaxy, reach for the night-sky classics. A shooting star with a blue trail is as easy as it is pretty:

And the ultimate bedtime classic: a golden crescent moon ringed with a few white stars. A great beginner model that you can turn into a lovely hanging decoration for the bedroom:

Insider secret: use glow-in-the-dark beads and this whole crew lights up once the lights go out. Guaranteed ‘starry night’ effect above the bed!
