Hi, it’s Léa! You know that irresistibly cute look — round little shapes, big shiny eyes and rosy pink cheeks? That’s kawaii, the Japanese art of all things adorable. And here’s the lovely part: fuse beads (Hama, Perler, you name it) were practically made for it. Today I’m sharing a selection of more than a dozen kawaii designs to make with the kids — from squishy little animals to sweet treats with faces. Grab your pegboards; we’re about to melt with cuteness (quite literally)!

Kawaii, the recipe for pure cuteness

Kawaii follows a tiny magic formula: a nice round shape, little black eyes, two pink cheeks and maybe a shy smile. That’s it. And this is exactly where fuse beads shine — every design reads like a chart, where one square equals one bead. Lay your beads on the pegboard following the picture, press with an iron through the parchment paper, and there it is: your little character comes to life. Perfect for kids, and just as fun for grown-ups who love the details.

A little menagerie of round, squishy friends

Let’s start with the most irresistible pick: the animals. This baby-blue narwhal, with its golden horn and blushing cheeks, is the ideal first project — the chart is clear and beads up in no time.

In the same round-and-cuddly spirit, this pink piggy and this cream-coloured cat hugging a little heart will win over the whole household. Both make perfect keychains or fridge magnets.

And for the dog lovers, these two corgis snuggled together are a proper dose of sweetness — proof that a neatly finished, well-pressed design always looks lovely.

Goofy animals to bead

Fancy a giggle? This spotty little cow with its yellow bell, this coiled-up green snake and this chubby dinosaur bring a playful touch to your collection. Three clear charts, easy to follow peg by peg — perfect for a rainy afternoon.

Kawaii treats: the play-food we can’t resist

Kawaii loves smiley food! These halved kiwis are great for practising your shades of green, and this pattern sheet is bursting with ideas: strawberry, ice cream, lemon, donut, popsicle, burger… enough to stock a whole beaded pantry.

My favourite of the bunch: the strawberry, with its tiny white seeds and pink cheeks. Here’s what it looks like halfway through on the pegboard — a real little sweetie.

If you’d like to see the technique in action first, this quick fruit keychain tutorial is nice and clear for beginners:

A little detour through Japan

Kawaii was born in Japan, so let’s give it a tasty nod with these dango — the famous dumplings on a skewer — reimagined as three little cat faces in pink, yellow and green. Adorable and wonderfully different.

And if the Sanrio spirit tempts you, take a look at our Hello Kitty and friends designs — kawaii at its very finest.

Two home-made charts to follow

To round things off, I put together two simple home-made charts you can copy straight onto your pegboard (one square = one bead). First, a soft little cloud, perfect for a mobile or a keychain:

Then a red mushroom with white dots and a cheeky face on its stem. Great for testing colour contrasts:

Your turn to play!

That’s plenty to fill several cosy, creative afternoons. The secret to great kawaii? Soft colours, a generous helping of pink cheeks and lots of smiles. Pick a design, get comfy, and above all — have fun! I can’t wait to see your cute little creations. See you soon, Léa.
